Google has added a Google Home extension to the Gemini app, allowing you to control your smart home while chatting with your AI assistant. The update, available to Android users as part of the Google Home public preview program, lets you adjust your lighting with natural language prompts like “Set up your dining room for a romantic date night,” and more. You’ll be able to use prompts like “Help me clean the kitchen.” ” and turn on the vacuum cleaner.
Previously, the Gemini app would launch Google Assistant when you tried to control your smart home. The new Google Home extension lets you perform actions across smart lighting, climate control, window coverings, TVs, speakers, and more from within the Gemini app.
However, Gemini extensions do not support all smart devices. As Google points out, it links to the Google Home app for controls related to security devices such as cameras, locks, gates, and doors. Also, you cannot run routines.
Then, to use this feature, sign in to the Gemini app with the same account you use on Google Home. From there, you can ask Gemini to perform a specific action, such as “turn on the living room lights.” According to Google, if Gemini doesn’t automatically use the extension, you may need to include “@Google Home” in the prompt.
