In a bold move to improve the welfare of Nigeria’s tertiary education workforce, the Federal Government has launched the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF) — an interest-free loan scheme offering up to #10 million to academic and non-academic staff nationwide.
Announced on August 14, 2025, in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, the initiative is part of President Bola Anmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Reform Agenda. Developed in collaboration with TETFund and the Bank of Industry, TISSF aims to enhance staff welfare, career development, and financial stability.

Eligible applicants can access loans capped at 33.3% of their gross annual salary, with repayment spread over five years and a one-year grace period. The funds may be used for healthcare, housing, transportation, small-scale enterprises, agriculture, or academic advancement.

Applications are to be submitted via on a first-come, first-served basis, through a transparent and fully automated process.
The program has already attracted significant interest, recording 2,474 applications, 691 completed submissions, 105 registered institutions, and 15 participating bursars. Stakeholders, including Hon. Abubakar H. Fulata, Mr. Sunday Dare, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, and union leaders, have praised the scheme as a landmark step in boosting morale and retaining skilled personnel.
